Boost your website’s security with AutoSSL

Great news! AutoSSL for all websites hosted with Host Geek!

What it means to our customers is that standard SSL security certificates will be automatically provided for websites on all shared hosting services without any extra cost! This boosts websites security, as well as encrypting any data sent/received from their site to their visitors to protect against prying eyes.

We use a service called Let’s Encrypt to issue SSL certificates for all our customers who are hosted on our Shared Hosting services. This means that our customers’ websites are now protected with an SSL certificate if they did not already have one.

AutoSSL supersedes the RapidSSL certificates (Standard) that we would normally have to be purchased and installed separately.

For customers with eCommerce websites, this new certificate is the minimum protection that is recommended when handling sensitive information such as payment and contact information of customers. However, we recommend that eCommerce sites be protected with the Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate. The EV SSL certificate enables the ‘green address bar’ in most modern web browsers, which allows shoppers to confirm that not only the connection is secure, but also the company running the eCommerce website is legitimate.

AutoSSL application is automatic for all customers on Shared, Reseller and Specialised hosting services. Customers on Virtual Private Servers (VPS) or Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS) services have access to this functionality too – simply contact our Support Team on 1300 722 504 or support@hostgeek.com.au to request the AutoSSL feature to be activated on your server.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I already have an SSL Certificate?

If you already have an existing SSL certificate (e.g. a Rapid SSL), then this certificate will continue to be the certificate in use until it expires. When the certificate expires, it will automatically be replaced with an AutoSSL certificate.

Please note that renewal billing for existing certificates will not be automatically cancelled, as many customers have these certificates for use on servers other than Host Geeks. If you wish to cancel the renewal of your existing RapidSSL certificate, please contact our Accounts team.

Will I get a refund if I have an existing RapidSSL Certificate?

Unfortunately, your existing certificate cost will not be refunded. Your existing certificate will continue to be used until the time that it expires.

What is the difference between RapidSSL and AutoSSL

The main difference between the two is that the new AutoSSL certificates (powered by LetsEncrypt) are FREE!!

On a technical aspect, the two certificates offer the same high-security 256-bit encryption levels. Both certificates are also compatible with 99% of browsers.

Do these certificates replace Wildcard (*.domain.com) certificates?

The answer depends on how you are currently using wildcard certificates. If you are using a wildcard certificate to secure multiple sub-domains for your website hosted on our Shared Hosting or VPS/VDS services, then yes, the new AutoSSL will replace this certificate.

However, if you are using the wildcard certificate on your own servers (not hosted with Host Geek), then you will likely need to continue using a wildcard certificate.

If you are unsure, please contact our Support Team who can discuss your specific requirements and advise you on the best solution.
