8 Annoying Things About WordPress & How To Fix Them

WordPress is one if not the best platforms out there for us to use today – but like everything in life, it does have its fair share of annoying hiccups and frustrating issues that arise once in a while. However, lucky for all of us, dealing with these annoyances is a piece of cake with the right system and processes put in place. In this article, we will highlight 8 of the most annoying things about WordPress and how you can easily go about fixing them.

8 Annoying Things About WordPress & How To Fix Them

1. WordPress Backup – Or Lack Thereof

WordPress in itself does not come with any built-in backup systems – how unfortunate. Instead, you are supposed to create your own backups instead of relying on your WordPress hosting company. Having a regular backup of your site saves you the frustration and mental breakdown when or should something bad happen to your website. There are a wide variety of free as well as paid backup solutions available for WordPress. Here are some of the plugins you can easily utilise today.

2. That Darn “Uncategorised” Category

If you are a frequent WordPress user, you will know what we are talking about. By defauly, WordPress comes with two built in taxonomies, they are called categories and tags. By default, each new post you put up is automatically filed into a built-in category titled Uncategorised. If you forget to assign the post to a specific category, it will automatically be filed under Uncategorized. This sometimes looks unprofessional, but is something you can easily fix. Check out this quick and easy article to find out how you can do this.

3. Lack Of Formatting Options

WordPress comes with two types of writing areas in their post editor. The first is Visual Editor, which is a WYSIWYG editor, and the second is Text Editor which is a plain text editor. Constantly switching from Visual to Text and vice versa will ruin your formatting.  An easy solution is to stick with the Text editor and learn some basic HTML formatting. Should you want or need to use Visual Editor, try using the TinyMCE advanced plugin. This plugin extends the default WordPress Visual Editor with more a lot more formatting options.

4. Getting Locked Out Of WordPress

Often times people end up accidentally locking themselves out of their WordPress admin area. It happens all too often. This can happen for a number of reasons – either you have forgotten your password and unable to recover it, or something broke when you were adding code or a plugin to your side. Check out this handy guide on what to do when you are locked out of your WordPress admin area. Never worry again!

5. A Not So Great Image Gallery

Whilst you can create galleries in your default WordPress installation, it is not really the best option because it lacks features like Albums, Tagging, Lightboxes, and more. In other words, the WordPress gallery is rather basic to begin with. Thankfully there are plugins such as Envira Gallery available which allow you to create gorgeous image galleries in WordPress without compromising the speed of your site. Some of the features include the ability to add Albums, watermark images as well as sell them.

WordPress shows your full articles in the RSS Feed. What does this mean? It means that users reading your posts in a feed reader will have absolutely no reason to visit your website.

You can easily change this in the WordPress admin area. All you have to do is go to the Settings » Reading page and scroll down to ‘For each article in a feed, show’ option and select Summary. Click on the save changes button to store your settings.

7. Comment Spam

Spam comments are one of the most annoying things that occur when you have a website or blog. Although WordPress comes with built-in comment moderation to deal with spam comments, comment spam can grow at a highly accelerated rate. Before you know it, you will be spending a lot more time that you should moderating comments. How can we fix this? Well, you need to start using Akismet. Akismet will catch most spam comments and keep them away from your moderation queue.
