Yes, that title is an in-joke! Slowly making its way into school curriculums around the globe, coding’s importance to the modern world is really starting to be noticed on a large scale in society. Steve Jobs himself said that “I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.”
What he means by that is essentially that coding teaches a constant and repetitive approach to solving problems, creating ideas and putting them into practice. I dipped my toe into the waters of coding after starting a WordPress site and wanting to make changes to the code of the website template I was using, and from there I’ve delved into sites such as CodeAcademy in order to further my basic understanding.

Coding Is Now The Language Of The World
Computer’s are part of every day life – from the workstation you use in your employment to the phone you carry around to the laptop you keep at home. As such, it’s to be argued that coding is the unifying language of the world as more and more software is used in our day-to-day life. With this in mind, it brings with it plenty of opportunities for challenging careers around the globe.
Increases Problem Solving Skills
Coding allows you to take a ‘bigger picture’ approach to jobs and to break them down into small and accumulatively manageable tasks. Working through trial and error, coding then allows you to make logical connections between tasks and develop analysis skills as a result too. Not only is this applicable to coding but can help focus goals in day-to-day life too giving you more focus and tenacity.

You’ll Gain A New Appreciation For Technology
Once you’ve done even a little bit of coding, you’ll never look at a webpage, an app, or even the macro on your Excel spreadsheet the same again. Seriously, something as simple as a livechat feature on a website will fill you with awe.
Encourages An Entrepreneurial Spirit
Take a look at Thomas Suarez. In this TEDX Talk, the 6th Grader talks to the audience about how coding helped him to develop a game that was sorely missing from his school-friends lives – realising that many of them didn’t like Justin Beiber, he used his coding skills to create a tap-tap game similar to a whack-a-mole fairground game where people tap to hit Beiber and put him back in his hole.
Using coding to develop this entrepreneurial spirit, Suarez has since learned over 20 programming languages and released many more apps.

At the end of the day, a computer is a tool that is to be utilised by you day-by-day and isn’t too dissimilar to a car – you regularly service your car, give it a top up and ensure everything is in working order so you should do the same with your computer. Coding can really help you develop programmes to not only increase your productivity but make your life a lot easier too.
